Homepage - Daylily Hybrid Seeds Hi, my name is Allan Ladd. I was born in Newcastle N.S.W. in 1952, one of 8 kids. I set up a retail plant nursery, of which I was proprietor for approximately 14 years. Prior to the plant nursery trade, I studied Science Microbiology and achieved a Bachelor of Science. My partner died of Hiv AIDs in 1991, so I sold up my business and moved to Byron Bay NSW to live. I also have Hiv and enjoy living in this area. I have grown daylilies for many years, though only got seriously involved in hybridizing in the past 3 to 4 years. In the past I have done much hybridizing of; Hippeastrums, orchids, bromeliads, clivia, liliums etc. Daylilies I find much more rewarding, as the gene pool is much more diverse and the generation time much shorter than other plants. ie 12 months from seed to flower in this climate, as opposed to 3 years in bromeliads and 3 to 4 years in orchids. Daylilies have also become a vehicle for learning computers including web page design, using photoshop on images, word documents for orders, spreadsheets and database applications. I find both diploid plants and tetraploid plants interesting and hence hybridize both groups. My particular aim in hybridizing is to produce quality flowers with terrific garden presence, over a very long flowering season, while also being very robust and fertile. I enjoy life and love a challenge. My personal daylily site "Daylily Hybrid Seeds" can be found at http://www.daylilyhybridseed.com/ . |
