Homepage - Daylilies by The Lake, Australia

Age 65 and married to Neville for 47 years, we have 2 daughters and 2 sons and 10 grandchildren and we all live in the Hunter Valley in NSW.

We enjoy a temperate climate here which is ideal for the daylilies as we have no extremes to contend with. The soil is sandy, but it has been built up over the years and is now very fertile with excellent drainage. Our garden is confined to a normal size suburban block, and the daylilies have to share that with our other passion, fuchsias.

We grew our first daylilies about 10 years ago -- about seven in all. At that time I thought we "had all the colours" so why would we need to buy more? About 5 years ago we discovered eyes with picotees, and wide frilly and gold edges. That is when we were hooked, and since then daylilies have become our obsession.

It didn't take us long to graduate from simply buying what others produced to trying to create our own masterpiece. To date we have not registered anything, but are seriously considering a couple at the moment. We have another 20 or so from last year that we are growing on to re-assess next spring.

We favour the daylilies that are the large flat singles with clear colours and lots of frou frou, but we can't resist some of the eyed and double edged ones either, and of course big green thoats on either type are the cherry on top of the cake. Our absolute garden favourite is WALKING ON SUNSHINE, an oldie, but its ability to continually rebloom and its clear bright colour never cease to amaze us.

Apart from the huge variety of colours, forms etc of the daylilies, the thing that I like most about daylilies in general is that, unlike most other bulbs or bulb like plants, they don't just flower for a few weeks in spring. They just go on...and on....and on.
