Aussie Daylily Robin member profile - Mardi Waring

I was born in Murwillumbah in 1932, and was given my 'user' name by brother Bill who couldn't say 'See Saw Marjory Daw' - it became Mardi daw and I have been Mardi ever since. I don't answer to anything else! I worked as a telephonist receptionist at the local Hospital, where I got the 'nursing' bug, and nursed for 14 mths all told before a form of arthritis in the spine put paid to that. I then worked as a Dental Nurse, receptionist before moving on to the Murwillumbah telephone exchange, so I had the free time to play competition hockey!

Alan was an engineer at Condong Sugar Mill, and we met at several musical functions. I was married to Alan in 1957 and up until 1987 moved 15 times - never paid rent and never owned a house, being in the sugar Industry, so "Fairview" in Lindendale road at Wollongbar, Northern NSW was our first very own house where we were on 6 acres. There the Daylily addiction took hold and since we had acreage - things went from bad to worse, and the last lot of hybridising I did was 1,000, that I actually saw bloom. 2001 seedlings were planted late, and our friend Grahame and his lady Caroline dug all 200+ and planted them at their property at Tregeagle, plus some I had potted as 'keepers'. These are the latest blooms that have appeared on the Robin.

We moved into "Linden" four days before Christmas on a normal house 'block' of 850sq metres, and have been on level 5 water restictions ever since! The drought in our area is broken, but the dam is only at 42% capacity and restrictions still apply. We do however have a 1000 litre rainwater tank which is full to overflowing, so we are going to bring in some of our seedlings from 'the 'farm' possibly this coming week, plus the named and registered plants I intend to keep. The rest stay at the ready at the farm.

We have had one garden sitting waiting and another almost ready. Grahame has over 4,000 seeds from his hybridising this year - so another with the disease and Caroline can't bear to throw any plant out! We are indebted to them both.

The photo of Yvonne Hargreaves and I was taken at Fairview the day of the Brisbane Daylily clubs visit to our property. Our children are responsible for our new home being called 'Linden' after our daylily name, and we have a plaque on the bricks near our front door. "malinday" means "Mardi and Alan at Linden daylilies!
